Retention and Drainage Aids
The Retention and Drainage Aid sub section of the Chemi FX centre of excellence strives to offer customers the most cost effective, tailor-made package to satisfy specific needs.
The technologies employed revolve around the performance of flocculants combination with performance enhancers. The flocculants can be polyacrylamide, polyvinyl amine or poly ethylene oxide based. They can be cationic, non-ionic or anionic and the molecular weight can vary from low to ultra-high.
Enhancers can be organic and inorganic and generally take the form of re-flocculating agents. Examples of inorganic enhancers would be bentonites, colloidal silicas, poly aluminium chlorides and alum. Organic enhancers could be the new generation highly structured three dimensional poly-acrylamides, starches, high charge density polymines, DADMACS etc.
Coupled with the above, the management of colloidal substances is becoming more critical with closure of water circuits and the move to more recycled furnishes. Colloidal substance management can be the single most important criterion in highly closed waste based furnishes.
Considering the complexity of the field, Chemishpere Paper Technologies has appointed highly qualified experienced individuals to specialise in this field. The correct selection of technology, product, dosage rates, product handling equipment and addition point are key to performance in this demanding field.
Water treatment refers to influent, effluent and internal water treatment relating to paper mill processes.
Technologies revolve around coagulation and flocculation. The correct selection of coagulants and flocculants has a major impact on the functioning of specific unit operations. These can be tailor made to address specific requirements of all mill related water streams.
The aim of this sub section is to achieve the best quality water at the lowest possible cost to the mill. With a vast range of polymers specifically targeting paper mill water streams, these aims can be achieved.
Whether the units rely on sedimentation, floatation or water removal, Chemi FX Water Treatment has the products to achieve the required water quality. Sanitation can also be offered but fall under the Biological sub section.
Colouration and Whitening
The Colouration and Whitening section of Chemi FX is tasked with all matters affecting the visible appearance of paper. This section has been divided into three sub sections:
Whitening Chemicals – Oprical Brightening Agents and shade control pigments and dyes
Colours – Dyes and pigments to alter the colour of paper
Security additives – alter the colour of paper should chemical tampering take place
Whitening chemicals compose of Optical Brightening Agants (OBA) supplied under the PolarBRITE trade name. These are generally stilbene based (di, tetra and hexa sulphonated) although other chemistries are available for specialised applications. Shading colours are also available in the form of pigments and dyes.
Colours are made up of basic and direct dyes, pigments and solvent dyes. They are supplied under the Iridescent brand name. These can be applied across the range of all paper grades. Tailor made blends can be supplied if there is compatibility between the constituents. Together with these fixing agents can be supplied to improve performance and affect final paper properties.
Security Additives – these are highly confidential products supplied to paper manufacturers where features need to be incorporated into the paper to prevent chemical tampering.
